Serving the Historic Homes of Suffern

Suffern is the commercial, transit, and historical center of western Rockland County. John Suffern — an Irish immigrant whose family were French Huguenots who had fled religious persecution in France to settle in County Antrim, Ireland — purchased land at the foot of the Ramapo Mountains in 1773 and called the place New Antrim. The village's location at the Ramapo Pass made it strategically critical during the American Revolution: Washington, Rochambeau, Lafayette, and Aaron Burr all used John Suffern's tavern as headquarters. Up to 400 Continental soldiers were stationed at the south entrance of the pass at all times. Suffern and Rochambeau encamped here in 1781 before the siege of Yorktown — the village is now a designated stop on the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail. The Erie Railroad reached Suffern in 1841, and the village's role as Rockland County's western transportation gateway has only grown: today I-87 (the New York State Thruway), I-287, Route 17, Route 59, and Route 202 all pass through the village, and Suffern Station hosts NJ Transit Main Line and Bergen County Line service to Hoboken (connecting at Secaucus to Penn Station), as well as Metro-North's Port Jervis Line. The Lafayette Theatre, Rockland County's only surviving movie palace, opened in 1924 on Lafayette Avenue and still operates today with its restored 1931 Wurlitzer pipe organ.

Meridian Contracting has served Suffern and the surrounding Rockland County communities for more than 25 years. We're a family-owned business based in Yonkers. Suffern's housing stock is more varied than most of its western Rockland neighbors — the village has a genuine downtown commercial district on Lafayette Avenue and Washington Street, a historic residential core with late 19th and early 20th century homes close to the station, postwar colonials, ranches, and split-levels in the outer residential areas, and newer construction and condo developments in and around the village. The Ramapo Mountains frame the village to the north and west, and the Ramapo Mountain foothills character means Suffern's residential neighborhoods deal with the same wooded lot canopy debris and shaded surface conditions that define the area's exterior maintenance environment.
