Exterior Contractors Serving Tappan, NY

Tappan is a hamlet in the Town of Orangetown in southeastern Rockland County — one of the oldest, most historically dense communities in the Lower Hudson Valley. The name comes from the Lenape word tuphanne, meaning cold water, applied by the Tappan tribe who inhabited the region when Dutch settlers first arrived in 1686. The first Orange County courthouse was built here in 1691. The first schoolhouse in Rockland County was built here in 1711 — the Cardona House, still standing. The Reformed Church of Tappan, founded in 1694, is the oldest congregation in Rockland County. On July 4, 1774 — two years to the day before the Declaration of Independence — local patriots gathered at Yoast Mabie's home in Tappan and adopted the Orangetown Resolutions, calling for a boycott of British goods. Six years later, in October 1780, British Major John André was brought to Tappan after his capture in Tarrytown, imprisoned at Mabie's Inn (now The Old '76 House, one of America's oldest continuously operating taverns), tried at the Reformed Church of Tappan, and executed by hanging on October 2, 1780 for his role in Benedict Arnold's West Point conspiracy. General George Washington, who used the 1700 DeWint House — the oldest surviving structure in Rockland County — as his headquarters four times between 1780 and 1783, reviewed André's case and signed the death warrant there. The Tappan Historic District, an 85-acre area designated by Orangetown in 1965 as the first historic district ordinance by any town in New York State, contains 28 contributing buildings along Main Street spanning the 1730 to 1929 period.
Meridian Contracting has served Tappan and the surrounding Rockland County communities for more than 25 years. We're a family-owned business based in Yonkers — about 15 miles east along the Palisades. Tappan today is an affluent residential hamlet with a median household income exceeding $177,000 and a real estate market characterized by tight inventory and high demand. Its housing spans the full range from historic 18th-century structures in the protected historic district to mid-20th-century colonials and postwar homes on the surrounding streets. The hamlet's mature residential canopy and proximity to Sparkill Creek generate the exterior maintenance conditions that define southeastern Rockland County: established deciduous shade, moderate ambient moisture from the creek corridor, and a housing stock with significant age on many properties.
